Family Photo Walk
We love strolling around our little town – especially in the Fall! The weather cools off, the leaves change, and everyone has festive decor out. Going for a walk as a family can be so fun, but we like to add a little twist…

Our Family Photo Walk
The first time that we did this, I was so surprised at the results. My boys were into it, and they got some amazing captures!
We took along my big camera, my iPhone, and the old iPhone. That way each of the boys and I could have a camera to use (because I had just as much fun taking pictures as they did!).
My younger son was pretty little the first time that we went. So he was mostly happy to just be outside exploring. But my older son, was so cute to watch! He would go up on his tippy toes or crouch down to get just the angle that he was looking for. Surprisingly he didn’t take multiple shots of one thing. Instead he would line up the image how he wanted it, and then take one snap.
How to Prepare
Before you leave for your family photo walk, make sure all of the devices are charged and ready to go! These days many kids have a tablet with a camera on it so they could bring their own tablet or phone to take pictures. You’ll also want to make sure that everyone has enough storage available on their devices. If you have younger kids, I’d recommend bringing a wagon. It’s helpful to be able to put your stuff in the wagon instead of carrying it. And when someone gets tired, they can just ride along instead of walking. I’d also, of course, recommend bringing snacks and water! If no one is hungry or thirsty, you will be able to extend your adventure a bit longer.
Where to Take a Family Photo Walk
A family photo walk is the perfect excuse to explore your home town. We drive through our community’s neighborhoods and downtown area all the time, but we rarely take the time to stop and take it all in. It was fun for both me and my boys to notice little details that we had never noticed before. The town also feels much bigger when you are walking along at a leisurely pace instead of driving through. The added benefit of doing a family photo walk in a downtown shopping area is that you can probably find a cute cafe, restaurant, or ice cream shop for a little treat once you’re done walking around.
You could also head to a hiking or nature trail with the goal of snapping pictures of the beautiful scenery. The fall is a great time for this type of adventure because the leaves are changing, and the weather is cooler. The kids love taking close up pictures of leaves, bugs, and rocks. And they always come home with pockets full of souvenirs from the woods too!
The Results of Our Family Photo Walk
I had no idea how any of his pictures would turn out. But when I checked my camera, I was super impressed! I loved seeing his take on the world, and his images were beautiful. Now I have the flower photo as my iPhone wallpaper, and it looks like something I would have downloaded from a wallpaper app.
I posted some of my favorites below. He took all of these himself! I just added some filters after the fact 🙂
