Teens are different

You’re not parenting a 7-year old. Your teen wants to be in charge of his time and choices, but he still has a lot to learn. You need to be on hand to help with skills like problem-solving and decision-making. That’s ‘help’, not do it for him.

Help Your Teen by Giving them time to decompress after school

One of the things a group of 8th grade girls said bugs them is when they are picked up from school and their parent (usually mom) immediately asks them about their day. They’ve just spent seven hours in school and would like to think about something else. So sit tight. If you play your cards right, information will be forthcoming. Here are some tips for helping them decompress, ease anxiety, and more!

Encourage teen to teacher communication

It’s time for your teen to be his own advocate. This takes courage, and is an important life skill that will serve him well in the adult world. If there’s a problem with a grade, encourage him to talk to the teacher. Same thing if he needs extra help. He won’t want mom and dad on line with him at college, or calling the boss about a performance review. Now is the time to develop that skill.

Help Your Teen with Preparation, routines and limits

This goes for homework, sleep, social media/screen time, sports, lessons and socializing. You’re not a prison warden, or standing there with a timer, but… you know very well that there needs to be a balance. And, as the parent of a teen, it’s time for brainstorming and compromise in some of these areas if you want to see any results.

Back-to-school internet contracts can be an excellent idea. Your own Internet provider likely already provides parental controls, but an internet contract serves to set expectations, responsibilities and consequences both you and your teens agree on together. Alternatively, check if there are special packages tailored specifically for parents with children and teens from your current provider.

Focus on the big picture, too

With college in the back of your mind, you may be putting extraordinary attention on grades. Of course they are important; but that also sends the message that grades are the only things that count during middle and high school. There’s lots of life learning to do if your kids are going to be successful in college and beyond. Are they curious and courageous? Do they show concern for others? How responsible are they for themselves (from laundry to behavior)? And remember, they don’t need to be at an Ivy League school in order to be successful.

Even a straight A student may not be socially and emotionally prepared to be successful in college. Now, this new school year, is the time to get back to the basics. When their character is strong, all the rest will follow.

Five Fun Hobbies For Families With Children

Children are often happiest when they are engaged and having fun with their family. However, children can also get bored very easily. Thankfully there are many fun hobbies for families to enjoy together while staying entertained.

Don’t get us wrong, it’s not like you need to fill their day with activity after activity; boredom is okay sometimes. However, it’s nice to know that you have a list of activities that will help to get everyone involved and creating new memories together. With the list below, you can introduce five fun new hobbies for your family – especially the little ones! You and your children deserve to have as much fun as possible together. So give these a try and make a difference in your week ahead.

Arts and Crafts

Technically, this is a genre of hobby rather than a specific hobby, because there’s so much that comes under “arts and crafts” that there could be a whole book about it, let alone a post. But if you can encourage your children to take on a quiet, creative hobby that they can tackle all year around, you will benefit as a family. There’s nothing quite as satisfying as seeing a project through, and you can work on projects together or separately. Something like cross stitch kits are a great way to get kids and beginner adults interested in this kind of hobby.

Gardening

One of the best hobbies to have with children in tow is gardening. Why? Well, children LOVE being muddy. The garden is the perfect place for them to have fun, and they can learn a lot from it too. They can learn where their fruits and veggies come from, and they can help you to plant them as well. Gardening is a peaceful activity. And yet, it can also keep children’s interest – even the little ones! They get the chance to dig, plant, and ask unending questions about the bugs in the garden.

Fishing

Whether you choose to take your children individually to a lake or river, or you go as a family, make sure that you purchase a kit for ice fishing that they can take along with them. Ice fishing is harder than regular fishing. So perhaps you want to keep this suggestion for the teenagers. But this activity will allow you to enjoy some valuable one on one time with no other distractions. Blowing off steam while fishing has its benefits. And as your children can really feel calm and open up more, they will also learn more about the differences in the creatures and nature that they’ll see.

Games and Crosswords

While some of the best hobbies are ones that get kids away from a screen, that doesn’t mean all of them do. Games and even an online crossword can be great hobbies for families with children. It gets everyone working together to solve the crossword or beat a particular part of a game. Even taking turns on everything can be a lot of fun.

Time to Jam

We don’t mean making strawberry jam, we mean getting out the instruments and jamming with the kids. Sure, it’s an uncool phrase, but there is something wonderful about family music time. Making music together is definitely one of the fun hobbies for families to enjoy! Think of the many successful bands that were families playing together!

Bake

People hear “baking” and they think about fairy cakes. However, baking extends to everything from biscuits and fudge, to crusty loaves of bread and baguettes. There is so much that your children can get from learning to bake, and it’s their newfound skills that will take them into adulthood. These are skills from which they can certainly benefit as they grow up. And it’s so much fun to get messy and creative in the kitchen. Turn on some background music, find a delicious simple recipe, and enjoy this fun hobby for families!

The best thing for your family’s budget and their quality of life is to invest in the things in your home. If you buy something that’s good quality and literally lasts a lifetime, you’ll end up saving so much money in the long-run.

In the past, this emphasis on quality and longevity was a given. Today, it’s normal to swap out items for new models. Now, only those with big budgets are changing out items like their couch just because they want a different look. For most, the reason why they get a new couch is because their old one was just too beaten up.

Before we get into the top types of sofas, it’s important to know that there are a few key design features that will help to make sure your sofa can withstand your family:

Choose sofas with curved edges and sloping armrests, so kids (or you) can comfortably lean against them.
Choose a hard-wearing fabric that can withstand regular wear and tear while looking great.
If you have a large family, opt for either an L-shaped couch, or get an ottoman footrest to expand the seating room.

Top Family-Friendly Sofa Types

Having a sofa that lasts you a lifetime is the best investment that you can make. The last thing you want is to cheap out on a couch and have your kids run it into the ground in just a few years from regular wear and tear. This is why you’ll want to stick to these sofa types:

Leather

A good leather sofa is absolutely family friendly. Surprised? Don’t be, as leather is an incredibly hard-wearing material that can take a lot and still come out looking fantastic. This is because leather is very breathable and dirt resistant. The only downside is that you’ll need to keep conditioning it to help it stay looking great and, most importantly, stay as stain-resistant as possible.

So long as it’s conditioned, it’s easy to keep clean, it tends to hold up to heavy wear and tear, and it takes very little effort to then keep it looking great.

Chenille

If you’re after a fabric sofa, then chenille is a great option. Chenille is a blend of synthetics and cotton, making it soft, stain resistant, and hardwearing. When selecting a chenille cover for your sofa, try to choose the thickest material you can, as this will last the longest. Think of this option as the happy medium between natural and synthetic, offering the best of both worlds.

Polyester

If you’re on a tight budget, but want a sofa that’s easy to maintain, then choose a polyester cover for it. So long as the polyester is thickly woven, it too can provide long-lasting performance. It won’t be nearly as comfortable as other options like chenille, but it will be easy to keep clean, which is a must if you have young children in the house.

Spring Photo Styling Tips

Warmer weather, everything in bloom, glorious daylight that hangs around longer and eventually turns into stunning sunsets make the perfect backdrop for spring photos. Since my daughter’s birth, we’ve had photos taken for Mother’s Day each year. I’ll be sharing these pictures while pointing out tips and tricks for creating beautiful photos of your family. Here are a few tips to help you gather inspiration and style your spring photo shoot.

8 Spring Photo Styling Tips

1. Get INSPIRED!

What is grabbing your attention right now? What makes you feel happy? Maybe it’s a certain color palette, a location, “prop,” or even clothing style. Use all of these things to help develop your style & setting for your photos.

2. Pick an Article.

I typically find one piece of clothing that helps to inspire me that I build the other outfits around.

3. Aim for Cohesive, Not Matching.

Everyone does NOT need to match. Keeping everyone’s clothing within the color palette you’ve chosen will help keep the look cohesive.

4. Think LAYERS.

Layers and different textures of fabrics etc. added into your outfits will add so much interest in a very simple way. Think scarves, jackets, hats, belts and and dainty necklaces to enhance your look. Mix your fabrics like denim, leather, cotton or knits.

5. Keep The Prints Minimal.

I love patterned material and mixing prints, but keep the prints minimal, maybe one or two and make sure they still fit into your overall color palette. You don’t want your outfits to look too “busy” and distract from the people in your photo.

6. Keep hair and make-up simple.

You typically can wear your make-up a little heavier than normal so that it shows up in pictures, but overall I like to keep my look timeless. When you do something out of the ordinary as far as hair or make-up in pictures, unless it’s a special occasion, you typically feel like it doesn’t “look like you” and end up liking the pictures less.

7. Pick a Location.

Once you’ve chosen a location for your pictures this can also help to determine the type of clothes you might choose to wear. Do you want to be more formal or casual? With the gals in your photos you may want to vary some wearing pants or shorts, dresses or skirts. Try your best to make sure everyone is comfortable. When you’re wearing something you like and feels good, you’re likely to get better cooperation!

8. Have Fun!

Last but not least, HAVE FUN! I’ve found especially with kids, that most times you’re best off to let the photographer guide the session and they will have way more success getting your kiddos to cooperate than you will.

Spring Photo Shoot Examples

For this shoot I started with this cardigan that I had recently purchased and loved, to wrap our other outfit details around. Our color palette included navy, shades of pink, olive and cream. My outfit stayed the same, but Haven did have a jacket that she wore for some of the photos and others she did not. That’s the beauty of layering.

This shoot we went with a more Bohemian vibe…long dress, floppy hat, mocs and shearling vest. I kept my outfit simple and used the hat in some but not all of the photos, same with Haven’s vest. In this case we did have 2 patterned materials; flowers and polka dots, but they both had similar color palette and the polka dot pattern was a smaller scaled pattern as opposed to my bolder floral, which made the two coordinate well.

These pictures were taken in downtown Lancaster, so a more urban setting, which I loved. We took the pictures for Mother’s Day, but also used it as an opportunity to have Haven’s 3 year old pictures taken, hence the balloons we brought as a prop. Our color palate was cream, blue with pops of pink. I had a bright pink tulle skirt I was originally going to wear, but I wanted Haven to be the highlight of the photos so I toned down my outfit to something much more everyday, added some interest with a great pair of heels and kept Haven in the spotlight with her pink flower crown, denim jacket and adorable cream tulle skirt.

This photo shoot was probably one of my favorites. No one else knew, but I had just found out I was pregnant…so technically both my kiddos are in this photo. 😉 I loved the dress I wore, while very simple the fringed bell sleeves added interest and I also brought a fedora hat to wear in some of the photos. Haven wore a simple linen floral dress and I matched my flats to the color in her dress. I braided her hair again to add simple interest and I also wore my hair back in some and took it down to wear the hat in others. We brought this great light gray linen chair right out of our living room to the shoot as a prop and it helped make us feel right at home.
