Why You Should Start Estate Planning Sooner Rather Than Later

Estate planning is often a topic that is overlooked or pushed to the back burner by many individuals. It’s understandable – after all, contemplating our mortality and the division of our assets can be uncomfortable and emotionally challenging. However, delaying estate planning can have significant consequences for both you and your loved ones. By taking proactive steps to plan your estate, you can ensure that your wishes are honored. Your loved ones will be taken care of. And potential legal and financial complications are minimized, and here’s how.

Preserving Your Legacy

When you engage in estate planning, you have the opportunity to define and preserve your legacy. Through the creation of a comprehensive estate plan with the help of an experienced estate planning attorney in Las Vegas, you can determine how your assets and belongings will be distributed among your heirs. Whether you wish to provide for your immediate family. Support charitable causes close to your heart. Or, ensure the financial stability of future generations, estate planning allows you to make deliberate choices about the impact you want to leave behind. By starting this process early, you can refine your plan over time and make adjustments as circumstances change.

Protecting Your Loved Ones

One of the most crucial reasons to start estate planning early is to protect your loved ones. In the event of your incapacitation or death, having a well-drafted estate plan in place ensures that your family members and beneficiaries are taken care of according to your wishes. Estate planning allows you to designate guardians for minor children. Specify medical treatment preferences. Establish trusts for dependents. And provide financial support for your family’s well-being.

  • Designating guardians for minor children. Through your estate plan, you can appoint guardians for your minor children. This ensures that if something were to happen to you and your spouse, someone you trust and deem capable will take care of your children. They will also then be able to make important decisions on their behalf.
  • Specifying medical treatment preferences:.Estate planning allows you to create documents like a living will or advance healthcare directive. These documents outline your medical treatment preferences and end-of-life care decisions. By clearly expressing your wishes, you relieve your loved ones of the burden of making difficult medical choices on your behalf.
  • Establishing Trusts for Dependents. If you have dependents who are not capable of managing their finances, such as minor children or individuals with special needs, you can establish trusts within your estate plan. Trusts can hold and distribute assets on behalf of your dependents, ensuring that their financial needs are met and managed responsibly.
  • Providing financial support. Estate planning enables you to provide financial support for your family’s well-being. This can be done through various strategies. Life insurance policies are one option. Other options are setting up a trust fund, or designating beneficiaries for retirement accounts and investments. By addressing these financial aspects in your estate plan, you can help alleviate financial burdens and provide for your loved ones’ long-term security.

Minimizing Tax Liabilities and Legal Complications

Another significant advantage of early estate planning is the potential to minimize tax liabilities and legal complications. By working with an experienced estate planning attorney, you can navigate the complex landscape of estate and inheritance taxes. This ensures that your assets are passed on to your beneficiaries efficiently and with the least possible tax burden. Additionally, a properly executed estate plan can help avoid probate, a lengthy and costly legal process that can tie up assets for months or even years. By starting estate planning early, you have the opportunity to explore various strategies and structures that can optimize your estate’s tax efficiency and streamline the distribution process.

Planning for Unexpected Events

Life is unpredictable. And unfortunate events can occur at any time. By starting estate planning early, you are better prepared for unexpected situations. These can include sudden illness, accidents, or incapacity. Through documents like a living will, healthcare proxy, and power of attorney, you can clearly outline your medical wishes. These will also allow you to appoint a trusted individual to make decisions on your behalf. And ensure that your financial affairs are managed appropriately. Addressing these scenarios in advance will alleviate the burden on your loved ones. Which will spare them the emotional stress and potential disagreements that may arise during times of crisis.

Maintaining Control Over Your Assets

Starting estate planning early allows you to maintain control over your assets, even beyond your lifetime. By incorporating strategies like trusts, you can specify how and when your assets should be distributed to your beneficiaries. This allows you to protect your assets from potential mismanagement, creditors, or even divorces within the family. Additionally, you can designate a trusted individual or a professional trustee to oversee the distribution of your assets, ensuring that your intentions are followed meticulously. Taking control of your estate planning early on allows you to safeguard your assets and ensure they are used in a manner that aligns with your values and goals.

Avoiding Family Disputes

A lack of estate planning can lead to significant family disputes and strains on relationships. Without clear instructions and guidance, disagreements may arise among family members regarding the distribution of assets. The appointment of guardians for minor children, or the execution of healthcare decisions can also become troublesome. These disputes can not only cause emotional turmoil, but also result in lengthy and costly legal battles. By starting estate planning early, you can engage in open conversations with your loved ones and address any concerns or conflicts while you are still able to actively participate in the decision-making process. This proactive approach can help minimize the potential for disputes and maintain harmony within your family.

Adapting to Changing Circumstances

Life is full of changes, both expected and unexpected. Your circumstances, financial situation, and family dynamics can evolve. By starting estate planning early, you have the flexibility to adapt your estate plan to these changes. Whether it’s the birth of a child, a marriage, a divorce, or significant changes in your financial assets, your estate plan should be regularly reviewed and updated to reflect your current wishes. Starting the estate planning process early allows you to establish a solid foundation that can be adjusted as needed

Starting estate planning sooner rather than later provides numerous benefits, including preserving your legacy, protecting your loved ones, minimizing tax liabilities and legal complications, planning for unexpected events, maintaining control over your assets, avoiding family disputes, and adapting to changing circumstances. By proactively engaging in estate planning, you can achieve peace of mind knowing that your wishes will be honored and your loved ones will be well taken care of in the future.

Looking To Put Your House On The Market? Read This!

July 5, 2023

Looking To Put Your House On The Market? Read This!Since reopening after the initial set of lockdowns, the property market in the UK, and in other areas around the world, is enjoying a mini-boom. Sellers who had their plans halted in the spring are now putting their house on the market. It’s not too late to take advantage of this boom. Getting your home ready to put on the market can be done fairly quickly if you have a bit of capital, time, and energy. Let’s take a look at some of the things that you can do to get your home market-ready.

Before You Put Your House On The Market

Get rid of clutter

One of the first things that any real estate agent will tell you to do when selling your house is to have a huge decluttering session. Not only will this will make your house look better and more marketable, but it will also benefit you when you move. Because you will have fewer things to pack, transport, and unpack at the other end.

Go through your house room by room and get rid of anything that you no longer need or use. If you struggle, try applying the Marie Kondo method. – If something does not bring you joy, or has a useful purpose, get rid of it! Dump it, donate it, or pass it on. But do not be tempted to keep hold of something ‘just in case’. Aside from seasonal items, if you have not used something in six months, you probably do not need it anymore.

Of course, when you do throw things out, do it so responsibly. Anything broken or unusable should be disposed of in an appropriate way. However, try recuperating some cash by putting things on eBay, Craigslist, or Facebook marketplace. Or donate to a charity. What is trash to one person is a treasure to another!

Sort out the small things

Go around your house with a clipboard and pen and really look at the small things that can make a big difference. That tap that has been dripping for months, fix it. The hole in the wall, patch it. That bit of gutter that overflows every time it rains, replace it. All of those jobs that are easy to sort but never seem to get done.

Some people decide to include household appliances in their house sale. This can help set your house apart if buyers have a lot of inventory to choose from, or this series of real estate. If this is something that you intend on doing, give them a really good deep clean and make sure they are in perfect working order. All you need is the replacement parts, a few basic tools, perhaps a YouTube video, and you can sort out most issues yourself.

[Read: Get Organized]

Improve curb appeal

First impressions matter, so make sure that when potential buyers show up to view your property, they are blown away by the outside. Hide the trash cans, mow the lawn, tidy the bushes, and give the front door a fresh coat of paint. All small tasks and these simple improvements can add significant value to your property.

Get your paperwork in order to put your house on the market

One of the things that holds up many house sales is paperwork. Make sure you know what documents and information you will need to be able to complete the sale, and have it all ready and waiting to go.

Back to Homeschool – A Mom’s Journey to Start Homeschooling

One Mom’s Journey to Start Homeschooling

Have you ever been to a party and met someone and thought to yourself, “They were definitely homeschooled!”Homeschooling defiantly had a reputation in the past, and not always a pleasant one. When I was growing up, my mom was a teacher. I loved back-to-school time. I remember going shopping at the educational supply store with my mom and helping her get her classroom ready. My favorite part was helping design the bulletin boards and laminating everything. And then there was the smell of new school supplies and the excitement of shopping for new clothes and shoes. Back-to-school time was right up there with Christmas for me….

Why We Chose Public School for Our Kids

Why We Chose Public School for Our Kids

Since I send my children to public schools, I decided to share our personal experiences with you! Our decision to send our children to public school was not one that we took lightly, and it is something that we continue to evaluate and consider on a regular basis. Hopefully my answers below will give you some insight into how we chose public school for our kids!

Are Public Schools Free?

Public schools are no-fee schools that are funded and operated by the government. Overall they have their pros and cons just like any other form of education, and they can differ greatly depending on your location and school district. Part of our decisions to send our children to public schools is that we chose to live in an area that has great public school districts. We were very intentional about this decision, and we know that it can be a huge factor for families. I feel lucky to have great options and resources for our children in the public school setting!

EDUCATION OPTIONS

This collection is created to shed light and answer questions surrounding different types of schooling and education. We are not trying to compare, but rather give you insight into the differences. Each family will need to make their own decision regarding what works best for their child and family. There are no “right” answers. It is an individual decision that needs to be made based on your student’s individual needs, learning style, abilities, and resources. Read below for more information about Public Schools.

Our goal of this Education Options collection is to allow you to dive a little deeper into the possibilities and opportunities around you!

Public | Private | Homeschool/Cyber | Montessori | Waldorf | Classical | Unschooling

Q:  What are some of the things that you considered when you chose public school?

There were so many small pieces that went into making this decision, but the main reasons were:

Great school.

I have been blown away by the administration and the teachers that are at my kid’s elementary school! They do an incredible job there and have education down to a science.

Family dynamics.

My kids and I have a great relationship, which means that they are very comfortable with me. Oftentimes, I think they rise to the occasion more-so when it is a teacher or coach asking them to try something. But if it’s mom… they don’t always feel the need to put in as much effort.

Career.

My husband and I both have careers that we really enjoy. And while I work from home, I still need quiet time and space to get my work done. It is great for everyone that we all get to go do our own “jobs”, and then regroup back at home for fun, family time.

Friends.

It is amazing for me to see the relationships that my kids have built in their years of school. They love spending time with their friends, and they get so excited to see each other when we are at community events, or even just at the park.

Resources.

The public school system does have great resources at their disposal. And while you may need to jump through some hoops to get there, they also want what’s best for your child. Simply having guidance counselors and education experts on your team is an incredible resource.

Finances.

Education is extremely important, and it is not something to pinch pennies over; but… free public school doesn’t always mean that it is a less valuable option. I feel that some of our local public schools deliver a far better and well-balanced education than some private schools.

A little background:

I grew up attending private Christian schools from Kindergarten through 9th grade before switching to a public school. Since both offered great experiences, it was a very difficult decision when choosing where to send our first child. All of the reasons that I just mentioned above were why we decided to send our first child to our local public elementary. The only additional reason that I would add is convenience, although you should never make a decision solely based on this!

When purchasing our home, we chose a highly rated public school district, and a neighborhood that is zoned for a very sought after elementary school, which is less than 3 miles down the road.

The other reason I would add is structure. Our children attended a Montessori school for preschool. And while they all enjoyed it and had a wonderful experience, I realized that our daughter needed more structure. Our son who loves to explore why/how things work did very well with the Montessori way of teaching, but our daughter benefits from having more guidance/structure throughout the day.

Q:  How does public school and this form of education benefit your children?

I remember being so surprised at how much each of my kids learned in their first year of Kindergarten. They went from my toddler to this incredible, young kid that could read and do math problems. At every grade, I love to see how they use well-thought-out curriculum to teach skills that continue to build upon each other. I don’t know how these teachers manage to fit in so much education into each and every school day, but my children are thriving in that environment. Sure, there are certain pieces of school that each one doesn’t always love, but as a whole… it’s been a great experience – both academically and socially.

But what I appreciate most about our public school district is their teachers and learning support staff – they are truly amazing!

Our daughter has dyslexia. While I am sure that most schools offer extra learning support, ours seems to be top-notch. I believe that there is value in a formal way of evaluating, communicating and implementing a learning plan; that I have very much appreciated. For our school, it’s very routine. They did a great job of figuring out our daughter’s exact needs, and focusing on her strengths.

Together we worked to create an IEP – an Individualized Education Plan for her. And periodically we have team meetings with all of her teachers to asses where she is at, what we need to work on,  and how we can give her extra support. Together we all share the same goals – to help her feel as confident as possible, to love school, and to enjoy learning.

But I also believe that we have had so much success because we choose to partner with our school for all of this. Because they are public, they have these extra resources. And because we are involved, we know that everyone is staying on top of her needs. There is consistency and routine in both her school day, and in the way we help with homework in the evening. So for our daughter’s learning style and needs, this really has seemed to work best for all of us.

Q:  What does a day in the life of your children look like at public school?

This is one of the areas that I struggle with the most when it comes to public education. I hate that I have to wake up my child early in the morning to rush and get them ready for school. I don’t like that they might spend part of their school day bored or wasting time. But… these things don’t outweigh the positives at the moment. Our local elementary school goes from 7:20 am to 2:30pm. But it is nice to have them home by 3:00pm each afternoon!

During their school day, they have their main class; but they each have separate teachers for their specials. They get to do gym, art, music, dance, computer, and library on a rotating schedule, which helps to round out their education.

While I am not crazy about the common core standards, I do find value in my kids learning each subject in a traditional structured environment. Each day is pretty routine, which is good for my son who sometimes gets anxiety in new situations. It’s comforting to always know what’s coming next. And this is where the amazing teachers become the best part – their days on paper may seem similar, but somehow they have the ability to make each day truly special and fun!

Remember:

Even though public schools are required to teach the same curriculum, their school environments can differ greatly from school to school. Before making a decision on what type of education would be best for your child, I strongly encourage you to do your research, explore your options, and visit as many schools as you can in person

Something seems to happen in our 30’s… our bodies start doing weird things, which forces us to tune in and actually listen to our bodies. This process of recognizing patterns and looking for solutions can be great for advocating for yourself and finding ways to optimize your physical and mental health! Instead of powering through and trying to cope with some of the things that were bothering me, I took a different approach… I started treating myself like a research project and ended up with a daily self care routine that is keeping me happy and healthy in my 30’s!

Nighttime Self Care Routine

I now have a regular nighttime routine where I take my supplements and care for my body so that I am able to wake up each morning ready to tackle the next day. Since each day looks a little different in my life, getting into the habit of doing this daily self care routine at night has allowed me to be more consistent than trying to remember to do these things during the day.

Before I dive into my nightly self care routine, I want to put in a disclaimer that this is what is working for me right now. I am not a medical professional. I am not an expert. I have simply worked through a process of trial and error with my own body and have figured out a few things that have had a significant positive impact on my physical and mental health! While I’m happy to share my tips with you, please keep in mind that your needs could be substantially different, and you should never start taking something new without checking in with your medical professional.

Magnesium Supplements for Sleep

I started taking a magnesium supplement because I read that it could be good for preventing headaches and migraines. And while I am not sure how effective it has been for that particular struggle, it has definitely seemed to help in other ways!

I always thought that I slept relatively well. I could fall asleep quickly, and I stayed asleep throughout the night for the most part. I would wake up really tired each morning, but I just figured that was normal (especially when you have a kid still struggling with sleep too).

But once I started taking magnesium, I noticed a significant shift! All of my dreams and nightmares that I thought were normal pretty much disappeared completely. I wasn’t tossing and turning in the middle of the night. I was even waking up easier each morning.

It was such a reminder that just because something is your normal doesn’t mean that it is normal.

If I ever forget to take magnesium before bed, I notice that I have a much worse night of sleep. I wake up in that half-awake state a few times throughout the night. I feel more restless. And I tend to have a lot of crazy dreams. Which then of course means that I wake up cranky and groggy.

I buy my magnesium supplements from my local stores and take the amount recommended on the bottle.

I decided to also explore other natural supplements to incorporate into my self-care routine and discovered real mushrooms organic supplements. Taking Reishi mushroom extract before bedtime will give you the best sleep ever, helping you wake up less anxious but calm and refreshed. Including mushroom-based health supplements in my daily regimen has made me more aware of the importance of using pure ingredients to support my well-being.

Halo Beauty – Hair, Skin, and Nails Supplement

Losing My Hair in My 30’s

I went through a scary few months where I was losing a ton of hair. It got to the point where I couldn’t wear my hair down because I had a bald spot on the top of my head. I was grateful that I had so much thick, curly hair to start that not many people could tell; but I could tell… and it was terrifying. I went to doctor after doctor and did all sorts of bloodwork. Each one told me that everything looked fine, and that I seemed healthy. But I wasn’t ready to give up my head full of curls so I kept looking for possible solutions.

Brittle Nails in My 30’s

During this time, I was also having significant issues with my nails. My nails were breaking painfully even when I kept them trimmed short. They were peeling, thin, and extremely brittle. Again, while the doctors brushed it off, I was very concerned at what these symptoms meant for my overall health… it couldn’t be a good sign.

Acne in My 30’s

While the acne seemed to be the least of my problems, it was still a concern and a frustration. I was getting horrible, underground zits under my chin. I also started getting acne on my back for the first time in my life! I bought all sorts of body washes and treatments that were supposed to help, but none of them were preventative.

Taking Daily Supplements

As you can imagine, my self-esteem took a hit during this time. I didn’t feel my best – I didn’t look my best. And I was worried that it was just going to get worse! Out of desperation, I started researching all sorts of different supplements and potential causes for my symptoms. I spent so much money on so many different supplements. Some upset my stomach. Some didn’t seem to have much of an effect. Some seemed too risky to take long-term. But after finding a few things that did seem to help, I was thrilled to find an even better solution…

Halo Beauty by Tati

Around this time, I had also discovered Tati and her makeup videos. I would watch her videos to fall asleep, and I loved her makeup recommendations. And when she released her beauty supplements, I was excited to look into it further and see if it might help me!

Hair Skin and Nails Supplement

She released a Hair, Skin, and Nails Booster that is a daily supplement meant to support those three areas. Many of the ingredients included in this particular supplement were things that I was already buying and taking separately, but it wasn’t ideal… I was taking so many pills each day that it was becoming overwhelming. I wasn’t sure how some of the things I was taking were interacting with each other. And I had bought some of the supplements from Amazon, which always worried me a bit because I didn’t have a ton of trust in where those ingredients were actually coming from.

As I looked more into this Halo Beauty supplement, I was pleasantly surprised to find just how much care and research went into this product (check out Tati’s video about it here).

But what was even more exciting was that the product worked!!!

My hair stopped falling out and became healthier again. My nails stopped breaking and peeling and became thicker. My back acne completely went away, and while I still get occasional face breakouts, they clear up much more quickly. My skin and hair overall feels healthier and more hydrated, and I have been so so relieved to find something that has worked so well for me!

Metamucil Pills for Stomach Pain

Before you keep scrolling, hear me out! I had a whole bunch of assumptions about Metamucil and fiber in general, and I didn’t ever consider that it could be helpful for me. I also only thought of Metamucil as the thing with the really gross name and the really gross powder that you had to try to drink.

But I was listening to a comedy podcast the one day, and they were joking about how their stomachs couldn’t handle much of anything anymore. Then the guest on the show shared how he started taking Metamucil pills each night, and that it was life-changing.

Considering I had woken up each morning with stomach pain for as long as I could remember, I figured it was worth a try, and I have been shocked with how well it’s worked!

I only take two pills each night, and I don’t spend the first few hours of each day with a stomach-ache! The bottle recommends that you take a crazy amount of pills multiple times a day, but I haven’t needed to do that. Hopefully you can figure out a dosage that works best for you.

And as another quick stomach tip… I have also found probiotics to be very helpful from time to time! They are a must-have for when I’m taking antibiotics, but they also seem to be very helpful if my stomach is just feeling off, or if I’m recovering from some sort of illness.

daily Routines that have helped

Liquid IV to Reduce Headaches

I never drink enough water. I don’t have a particular excuse for it, and I know it’s an issue… but I still just never drink enough water. I also would get headaches almost daily. There are a million different potential triggers for these headaches and migraines, but I was always aware that hydration could be a factor.

When I heard about Liquid IV, I was excited to try it!

The company states that one packet of this powder mixed with a bottle of water can provide the same hydration as drinking two to three bottles of water. It is said to utilize the science of Cellular Transport Technology to hydrate you more efficiently than water alone.

And while I am not well-versed in the science behind this technology, I can speak from personal experience. Drinking a bottle of water with a Liquid IV packet in it each day has significantly reduced my headaches!

I mix up a bottle of Liquid IV each evening and drink the whole thing before I go to sleep that night, and it really does seem to be working well for me. I highly recommend the lemon-lime flavor (I am not a fan of fruit punch), and I’d recommend adding ice to make it taste better too.

Another innovative solution that can be incorporated into a self-care routine is IV therapy in Newport Beach. This potent method delivers essential nutrients directly to the bloodstream, bypassing the digestive system, and can provide immediate benefits like increased energy, improved immunity, and enhanced overall well-being.

Heating Pad and Tennis Ball for Back Pain

Between 15 years of gymnastics and a family history of back and neck problems, it is no surprise that my neck, back and shoulders lock up fairly regularly. I used to pay hundreds of dollars to get deep tissue massages or go to chiropractors, but then I started to learn effective ways for managing things at home.

Heating Pad for Back and Neck Pain

Most nights I lay on my heating pad for a while as a preventative measure. I apply it to my neck, upper back, and lower back in increments of time while I watch TV and wind down for the night. This regular maintenance helps keep my muscles from tightening up too much and has reduced the amount of mornings I wake up with a severe neck ache (that inevitably leads to a severe headache)

Tennis Ball for Back Pain

While the heating pad is helpful for preventing problems, the tennis ball has become my best friend for pinpointing trouble spots!

I tend to get horrible knots along my shoulder blades. I would wait until it’d get unbearable, and then I’d schedule a deep tissue massage to work on the problem areas. At one of these appointments, the masseuse actually recommended that I use a tennis ball to work on the knots before they got so bad. And what do you know… it works!

Sometimes it is the simplest tips that work the best, and this one has been a game-changer for me. I simply lay on a tennis ball and apply direct pressure to each knot. I am able to pinpoint them exactly and apply as much pressure as I can handle until I am able to melt away that knot.

Favorite Lotion to Soften Feet

Dry, peely, rough feet… it is so common, but that doesn’t make it any less annoying! There are tons and tons of products on the market that claim to give you soft feet, and I have tried many of them. But the only thing that has worked like a charm is a lotion that isn’t marketed specifically for feet!

Vaseline Intensive Care Essential Healing. You’re welcome.

This stuff is so cost-effective and works so amazingly well! It doesn’t make your feet greasy and slippery. It doesn’t make all of your skin peel off. It just works beautifully.

I apply this lotion to my feet after I get out of the shower and sometimes at night before bed. You can wear socks after application if you want to, but you really don’t have to! You will start to notice the difference fairly quickly, but when you use it consistently it is magical.

Product to Prevent Chapped Lips

So many products on the market actually seem to make my lips feel worse than before I put them on. Those eos lip balms that have been so popular? Ouch! They smell good, and they look cute; but they dry out my lips.

I’ve had the best luck just sticking to the traditional Chapstick brand, and I recently found one of their products that I have fallen in love with!

Chapstick Total Hydration Night Serum is so soothing. I apply it right before bed, and it keeps my lips feeling hydrated and healthy. It’s such a small thing, but chapped lips can be downright painful and unsightly!

* Go here for the Amazon affiliate link for Chapstick Total Hydration

Figuring out your own daily self care routine

Seeing all of this written down, it seems like a lot! But in reality, my daily self care routine only takes me a little bit of time each night. I drink my Liquid IV and lay on my heating pad while watching TV, I put on lotion and chapstick, and I take a few pills.

And while the products that I mention throughout this article might not be the right fit for you, I hope you see the bigger takeaway! I want to inspire you to take your own health seriously. I want you to be your own biggest advocate and try to find things that will have a substantial positive impact on your life! We don’t have to struggle through each day… we can make things better for ourselves – one step at a time.

Playroom Organization Tips so that the Playroom STAYS Clean!

Playroom organization tips

Over the years I have tried dozens of strategies for playroom organization. I love clean lines, order, and little clutter. But I also want an inviting space that encourages creativity and allows for hours of non-technology play. Keep reading for my 5 tips to organizing the playroom.

My kids love when I help them create villages! We build little homes, a treehouse, stores, schools, parks, zoos, and more! We bring in little animals, matchbox cars, and before you know it – their playroom is transformed into another world. This set-up can take hours, and we often leave it up for a few days. Each time they run back to play again they add more to it.

But once the excitement wears off and they want to play something else; we clean up our space thoroughly and start with a clean slate again. I have found that in order for this cycle to continue, it only works efficiently if every single toy has a designated spot. This allows for cleaning to be done quicker and easier, and really allows for overall order. When the playroom is a mess the kids won’t go in it. Homeschooling Myths vs Reality – What the Research Tells Us

homeschooling myths

An in-depth look at the research behind common homeschooling myths help us to uncover the reality of this childhood education option

As homeschooling becomes more and more popular across the United States, two damaging myths continue to thrive. We wanted to find out how widespread those myths are, and how they compare to the reality of homeschooling today. So in January and February, we surveyed over 2000 people. Then we reviewed the existing research to discover the truth about homeschooling in 2020. Below are the study’s findings for homeschooling myths vs reality.

Traditional Classrooms and Learning in Groups

Classrooms hum with the chatter of excitable teens. Books and papers spill from overstuffed lockers. Days are routine, conducted by the regular, shrill blast of the school bell.

Sound familiar?

Most of us have experienced the ‘institutional’ school system in some form or another. Ever since the Industrial Revolution of the 18th Century, when the need arose for societies to be able to produce a functioning workforce that could read and write. Since then, group schooling (such as public schools) has been the norm. But that wasn’t always the case.

How Homeschooling Was Started

For most of history, those who were privileged enough to get a formal education received it at home. Their teachers were personal tutors, parents and other caregivers. This custom gradually faded as the makeup of society changed and the practice of group schooling spread.

But in the latter half of the 20th Century, dissatisfaction with the modern school system increased in some quarters. The idea of home education grew in popularity once again, albeit in a different form. Parents would be the sole educators. Passing on their world-views and the knowledge that they deemed important. And in that moment, the modern homeschool movement was born.

Throughout the 1980’s and 90’s the number of homeschooled children swelled throughout the U.S. And since the late 1990s, this number has doubled.

Number of Homeschooled Students

Common Homeschooling Myths

However, even as the number of homeschoolers rose, the general public remained skeptical of homeschooling. Negative stereotypes began to take root. And without any apparent basis in fact, two of these stereotypes spread through society and developed a mythical quality.

  1. Myth #1 – Homeschooled students suffer from a lack of social development.
  2. Myth #2 – Homeschooled students perform worse academically, receiving fewer opportunities to succeed than traditional school students.

Over the years, various studies have been carried out to compare the social and academic outcomes of homeschooled students to those in institutional schools. While much of this research has confirmed that the myths around homeschooling are untrue, they have done little to address the widespread nature of these damaging ideas.

Homeschooling Research – An Extensive Study

Study.com wanted to better understand the homeschool community and find out where people stand on the effectiveness of these two schooling methods today. So, in January and February of 2020, we conducted a survey of 2,398 parents and students (aged 13 and up), both with and without homeschool experience.

Combined with a review of the existing research, we aimed to discover how widely held these myths are, and shed some light on the reality of homeschooling today.

Homeschooling and Social Development

It’s clear from the results of our survey that this myth still holds. Well over half of homeschoolers felt that poor socialization was the most common misconception aimed at them.

Percentage of Homeschoolers Who Felt Poor Socialization

In a different question, non-homeschoolers, and especially students, felt that institutional schools would be better for their social development. Below are survey responses to the question “Is it more beneficial for children to learn social skills and emotional maturity in a brick-and-mortar environment, or a homeschool environment?”

Social Skills

Of the non-homeschoolers we surveyed, over a third of parents and over half of students told us that they thought institutional schooling was better for their social development.

Most Beneficial Method of Homeschooling

But it was also striking how many homeschool parents felt the opposite. Only 2.6% of homeschool parents we asked said that institutional schooling would benefit children’s social development.

Most Beneficial Method of Schooling

Homeschool Study Results for Social Development

This result matches what we found in existing research. The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) reported in 2016 that 80% of homeschool parents had concerns with the school environment. Saying that drugs, peer pressure, and the social environment were factors. 34% said this was their main concern.

One final thing that stood out from our survey results was the fairly consistent feeling that neither method of schooling is more beneficial than the other. Across all the groups we spoke to, more people believed that children would develop similar social skills regardless of the type of school they attend.

We did a lot of digging into homeschool studies. However, we couldn’t find any evidence to support the idea that homeschooling is bad for children’s social development.

So this appears to be a myth in the truest sense – a story told to make sense of something that is not well understood. As the National Home Education Research Institute (NHERI) states, ‘there is no empirical evidence that homeschool causes negative things compared to institutional schooling’.

Given the lack of evidence, presumably homeschoolers feel this is the most commonly held misconception among non-homeschoolers. Unfortunately, it‘s something they hear a lot in conversation and in the media that they consume.

Evidence of Social Development Advantages for Homeschooling

There is however, actually some evidence that homeschooling may be better for social development than traditional schooling. Also according to NHERI, homeschooled children are “typically above average on measures of social, emotional and psychological development. Research measures include peer interaction, self-concept, leadership skills, family cohesion, participation in community service, and self-esteem.”

They go on to say that “research designs to date do not conclusively ‘prove’ that homeschooling causes [improved social development],” and that further research is needed, but this is exactly the point. There just isn’t any evidence to support the idea that homeschooling hurts students’ social skills.

Where Does this Homeschooling Myth Come from?

So where does this idea come from?

In reality, it may be that non-homeschoolers do not fully appreciate the range of social activities and interactions that homeschooled children experience. If homeschooling simply involved sitting children down at home and getting them to work through exercises, then it could be argued that those children’s social development would suffer. But in practice, many homeschooled students are active in groups outside the family home.

For example, some parents see homeschooling as an opportunity to teach their children about the world through exploration and interaction with it. Others do primarily teach children academics at home. But they use the increased freedom to take educational trips, and travel to places that provide valuable learning experiences and interaction with other people. Some even hire other experts or services like spark tutoring to teach or offer additional support in a specific areas.

Reasons for Homeschooling

Many homeschool parents we surveyed commented on the freedom that it provided. One told us that homeschooling allowed them to “tailor [education] to what interests your child has. If it’s college, a trade school, or neither. You can do what is best for your child.”

Another said their main reason for homeschooling was to free up “more time to do things that interest us. Such as trips, excursions, 4-H [an organization devoted to youth development], etc.”

Others take advantage of local sports teams and other community programs. Some join homeschool co-ops, where their children interact with others in an environment that aligns with their parents’ views on education. According to one researcher, “the average homeschool student participates in five or more out-of-home social activities”.

So while there is a perception that homeschooling harms children’s social development, the truth may be the opposite. Certainly, given the range of homeschooling approaches practiced across the U.S., this generalization is not well founded and doesn’t reflect the reality of modern homeschooling.

Homeschooling Academic Performance and Opportunities

Here again we found that the myth still holds. Large numbers of non-homeschoolers told us that they felt institutional schooling would lead to better academic outcomes for their children than homeschooling would.

Also as before, we found that homeschoolers, especially homeschool parents, were very skeptical of the benefits of institutional schools in setting their children up for success.

Measuring Academic Success in Homeschool Students

For this part of the study we were really interested in two measures of academic success:

  1.  The best chance to pursue a college degree
  2.  The best prospects to be a successful adult

On both measures, we saw that non-homeschoolers had more faith in institutional schooling than homeschooling to deliver academic success. On the other hand, only 2.1% of homeschool parents felt that institutional schools would be better for their children’s college chances. And just 0.5% said the same for the chances of being successful adults.

School Method That Offers the Best Chance

Why Homeschool Parents Choose to Homeschool

This tallies with the results of separate question, where we asked homeschool parents why they homeschool. The most popular reason given (from almost 60% of respondents), was dissatisfaction with education in schools. Among non-homeschoolers in our survey who said they would consider homeschooling, over a third (35%) said that they didn’t like education in schools.

As with the question of social development, we see that both homeschoolers and non-homeschoolers feel that – in general – the education their child is receiving is more likely to lead to success.

‘In general’, because the picture is not completely clear-cut. Many children switch between homeschooling and institutional schooling as needs and circumstances change. Some families have a child that they homeschool, and another that attends their local school. As one experienced homeschool parent told us, “I have counseled literally hundreds of families [on homeschooling]. Everyone has different reasons for what they do. And some families only homeschool some of their children. Every situation is different. And every family is different.” Ultimately, families choose when, and for how long, to homeschool.

SAT Scores for Homeschool Students

Existing research has looked into the question of academic success too. A 2014 study showed that homeschool students’ SAT scores were much higher than the average scores of college-bound high school seniors.

In 2015 NHERI found that homeschool students perform in the 86th percentile on standardized tests, as a measure of the national school-age population.

Percentiles refer to performance groups in a given population. So the 1st percentile contains the group that has the lowest set of scores on a test. The 100th percentile contains the group with the highest scores. By definition, the 50th percentile is the ‘average’ score of a given population.

Achievement Tests for Homeschoolers

In 2019 NHERI also reported that “The home-educated typically score 15 to 30 percentile points above public-school students on standardized academic achievement tests”.

Of course, we should be wary of accepting these results without question.

Samples for such studies will have a strong bearing on the results. It’s possible that self-selection plays a part. More motivated parents are more likely to be involved in this kind of study. And those parents may be from more privileged backgrounds with more resources to put into their homeschooling efforts.

That being said, in an analysis of peer-reviewed research, 35 of the 45 studies (78%) found that the homeschooled students or graduates performed significantly better than their institutional school peers. Measures that were looked at in these studies were exactly those we’ve been discussing: academic achievement, social and emotional development, and success into adulthood (including at college/university).

Homeschool Students Going on to College

It’s also been reported that “colleges and universities boast that their place of learning is supportive of students who have largely been homeschooled ”and that“ universities actively recruit homeschoolers”. This includes prestigious schools like Brown, Harvard, Princeton, UC Berkeley, and many more.

The question of setting children up for success gets to the heart of why people homeschool. No parent chooses this option because they want worse outcomes for their child. The truth is that no single method of schooling will work for everybody.

Where families have the motivation and the resources to homeschool their children effectively, their outcomes may be measurably better than their institutionally-schooled peers. And where schools have the resources, the teaching quality and support of the community, there is every chance for the children who attend them to become successful adults.

So What Have We Learned About Homeschool Myths and the Reality of Homeschooling?

However these negative homeschooling myths seep into the collective consciousness, it is clear that they persist. But where research has been carried out, it suggests that homeschooling can actually have positive effects on students’ social development and academic achievement.

We should be wary of accepting such results without question and further research is required in this area. But undoubtedly it is true that if motivated, nurturing parents take homeschooling seriously, then it can be extremely beneficial for their children’s prospects.

It may be that these myths are based on an outdated vision of homeschooling. The modern homeschooling community is a rich demographic tapestry woven from political, religious and ethnic groups from all corners of society.

And in the digital age, homeschoolers have access to more information, support and affordable resources than ever before. This is likely to further boost academic success for homeschoolers, and give families more confidence if they feel they want to try homeschooling.

Which Education Method is Better?

The reality is that, as with so many aspects of life, there is no simple answer to the question of which method of schooling is more beneficial; there is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ solution. Different children will flourish in different environments according to their personality, temperament, family situation and a whole range of other variables.

Homeschooling is a huge responsibility for parents to take on. But with a dedicated approach, and when students receive the appropriate levels of support and attention, they will ultimately benefit. And of course, the same can be said for children in institutional schools.

What is important moving forward is to redress the balance of people’s common misconceptions around homeschooling.

This appears to be happening slowly over time, but homeschoolers, non-homeschoolers and observers alike should take a responsible approach to the discussion and work to dispel unsubstantiated myths.

Only in this way can we counter existing stigmas so that people can make informed choices, based on sound judgements, about whether to homeschool their children.

6 Good Qualities That Every School Counselor Needs

1. Persuasion skills

As school counselors ensure students’ well-being and success, they often must convince various stakeholders to follow their propositions. Therefore, having persuasion skills is a must for them.

How do strong persuasion skills help you perform your job?

Strong persuasion skills let you perform your job as a counselor effectively by helping you with the following. They help:

  • Improve your relationships with students and parents
  • Influence students to take certain actions to prepare them for their chosen career paths
  • Convince parents to support their children
  • Navigate complex situations and resolve conflicts
  • Collaborate with teachers to implement individualized educational plans
  • Influence stakeholders to consider alternative viewpoints and arrive at mutually beneficial solutions
  • Articulate your suggestions more effectively and gain support from administrators, teachers, and parents

While strong persuasive skills are indispensable for you, becoming a professional school counselor requires formal education, such as a degree in school counseling. Obtaining a school counseling degree from a reputable institution validates the necessary skills and abilities for performing your job.

2. Assessment skills

The ability to assess students forms the basis of a student counselor’s job. Good assessment skills help you understand and support students effectively. You can help students make better career decisions through systematic assessments.

Good assessment skills also help you uncover barriers and challenges students feel even when they don’t articulate much. However, it is crucial to look at certain aspects of student behavior to be effective and accurate in your assessment.

What should you look for when assessing a student?

Some key areas to consider during student assessment include:

  • Evaluate students’ academic performance by examining their grades, learning habits, and study styles.
  • Observe students’ mental health by identifying signs of anxiety and depression and evaluating their coping skills.
  • Understand the verbal and non-verbal cues indicating students’ challenges.
  • Gather valuable information about student strengths, weaknesses, and challenges for making tailored strategies.
  • Understand contexts and decipher situations to draw meaningful conclusions.
  • Listen effectively to understand students’ perspectives.
  • Help students articulate and reflect on their thoughts and emotion by asking probing and leading questions.
  • Engage with students to facilitate self-awareness.
  • Identify academic struggles, emotional distress, and career interests and collaborate with parents and teachers to make better choices.
  • Develop trust and rapport with students by asking direct questions about their problems.

3. Utilize authority when required

Student counselors need to be approachable so that students can come to them to comfortably voice their concerns. But, at the same time, they need to possess a certain degree of authority to make others understand and accept their suggestions.

Why is utilizing authority a must for a school counselor?

Establish clear boundaries – Good student counselors must be sufficiently authoritative to draw boundaries to keep their relationships with students professional.

Enforce rules and policies – A moderately authoritative nature helps you enforce rules in the school and ensure students adhere to the code of conduct.

Provide direction – Authority helps you give students clear and firm directions about their careers and make them follow the guidelines emphatically.

Teach respect  – By exerting authority, you can foster an environment where respect for oneself and others is valued.

Promote accountability – By showing yourself as a figure of authority, you can instill accountability in students, guiding them to accept the consequences of their actions.

4. Have a pleasant personality

A student counselor’s pleasant personality helps them be more effective in their role. Here are some notable reasons for a student counselor to have a pleasant personality.

Maintain a positive attitude – A student counselor with a pleasant personality can maintain a positive demeanor, creating a welcoming environment for students.

Ensure approachability – With a pleasant personality, you generally look more approachable, so students don’t hesitate when coming to you. Hence, they can comfortably seek guidance and support.

Non-judgmental listening – A pleasant counselor conveys the idea of listening without judgment, encouraging students to articulate their concerns freely.

5. Demonstrate patience

An effective student counselor must also be patient. Patience is their ability to remain self-possessed and composed when confronted with resistance.

Patience helps student counselors suppress feelings of resentment and irritation when things don’t go as decided. It also makes you realize that it takes time for the change to manifest itself and show results.

Some ways patience helps you improve as a student counselor are:

Active listening – Patience enables you to pay attention to students’ thoughts and feelings without rushing to judgment or interrupting.

Time and attention – With patience, you can give enough time and attention to each student instead of listening to their concerns carelessly.

Prevents emotional outbursts – Your patience allows you to suppress emotional outbursts and listen to students benevolently.

Prevents anxiety and raises confidence – Demonstrating patience helps you learn over time that impatience develops anxiety and discouragement, whereas being patient makes you confident about your approaches.

6. Know when to act and react

Counselors often encounter tricky situations, for instance, when dealing with students suffering from neglect and abuse or demonstrating unhealthy behavior. In such situations knowing when to act becomes an essential quality. More reasons why this skill is a must for school counselors are:

Deciding quickly – It helps school counselors think on their feet and make prompt decisions if they find students exhibiting harmful behavior or experiencing a traumatic event. Their prompt action can ensure the safety and well-being of everyone involved.

Coordinating with support services – Deciphering when to act helps you effectively collaborate with administration, teachers, and parents.

Balancing proactive and reactive measures – By understanding a situation, you can decide between engaging in reactive or proactive measures. Sometimes, you need proactive approaches such as organizing counseling programs and skill development seminars. In other instances, you need to be reactive, for example, when students come to you seeking guidance and support.

Conclusion

Becoming a school counselor is complicated, yet it is a rewarding career. It makes you attain self-fulfillment by helping students overcome challenges and navigate their academic path. When dispensing your duties as a counselor, the qualities mentioned in the article above help you improve and be more effective.

Tips for Maintaining Your Roof Year-Round

June 28, 2023

Maintaining your roof year-round is essential to keeping it in prime condition and standing up against changing weather conditions. That’s because a well-maintained roof not only prevents damage from sun, snow, and rain – but also increases your home’s residence value, saves you money in repairs or replacement costs, and gives you peace of mind knowing that your home is protected. With the right tips and maintenance techniques, you can keep your roof safe and sturdy all year!

For more helpful resources, check out the full Home Safety collection

Clean gutters regularly to prevent water damage

Keep your gutters squeaky clean to prevent water damage! Guttering is essential for keeping your roof and foundation dry, as it carries rainwater away from your property. That’s why it’s important to keep on top of regular gutter maintenance – the longer you leave it, the easier it is for a bunch of leaves or debris to collect and start blocking up your flow. Add this chore to your checklist – if you don’t, costly repairs further down the line could end up putting a real dent in your wallet. Or, if you are in need of an upgrade, you might want to get new cast iron guttering.

Have a professional inspect the roof every few years for structural integrity

Having a professional roofer conduct an inspection every few years can be beneficial to the structural integrity of your roof. It is important to find a licensed and certified roofer who offers free inspections. They can provide detailed information on any damages or potential problems that have developed over the past few years. By having this inspection done regularly, you will be able to prevent long-term damage before it becomes an issue. To learn more about inspections and other ways to maintain your roof’s health, find out more from this site. Keep in mind that depending on the type of material used, roofs may need more frequent attention.

Repair and seal any cracks or leaks with waterproof sealant

Taking care of cracks and leaks in your home or business property is essential for maintaining the condition of the building. Using a waterproof sealant to repair and seal these areas will help prevent further damage from occurring, saving you a lot of time, money, and energy. Not only will you be protecting your investment, but you can also extend the life of your property by taking action to actively fix any existing cracks or leaks. Make sure to purchase a reliable sealant that can withstand long-term weather conditions for the most effective results.

Keep trees trimmed to minimize potential damage from fallen branches

Keeping trees trimmed is essential to reduce the risk of damage from falling branches. It’s a safety precaution you can take to protect your property, precious items, and even people. Careful pruning will help keep branches healthy and make them less likely to break in harsh weather conditions. Besides preventing danger, trimming trees optimizes their health by removing dead or damaged bits, letting them concentrate their energy where needed. Taking proper care of your backyard greenery will save you worry and potentially hefty repair bills in the future.

Inspect for moss, mildew, and other potential problems annually

Whether you’re the proud new owner of a house or have owned one for years, it’s important to inspect your home annually to check for any potential issues. This includes anything from moss and mildew to warping siding and roof damage. Investing a few moments each year could save you thousands down the line when you catch and repair a potential problem before it gets unmanageable. It may seem tedious, but upkeep is an essential part of being a responsible homeowner.

Check for loose shingles or tiles and replace them as needed

Inspecting and maintaining your roof is an important part of keeping your home in top condition. To prevent more costly repairs further down the line, you must check for any loose shingles or tiles every few months and replace them as needed. This can be done yourself if you’re handy, but if in doubt, it’s best to call in a professional who can complete the job properly – protecting your home and saving you money.

Cleaning your gutters, repairing and sealing leaks, trimming trees, inspecting for potential problems, checking for loose shingles/tiles, and having a professional inspect your roof every few years are all essential components of proper roof maintenance. Taking preventive care of your roof can save you the hassle and expense of significant repairs down the road. A little extra effort today could spare you a big headache tomorrow — be sure to check out our other resources for further information on how to keep your roof in tip-top condition.
